How to adjust MetaMask privacy settings
At MetaMask we take user privacy seriously, and work to give you options. For further information about how MetaMask processes personal information, including the privacy rights that might be available to you, please visit our Privacy Notice here.
'Basic Functionality' represents MetaMask's default configuration. It is a single toggle that controls a group of features, including those that use third-party internet services. When these features are active, your IP address is shared with MetaMask as part of normal internet traffic. MetaMask uses this data temporarily and never sells your data.
If you wish to further limit the collection of your device information, you could consider the use of virtual private networks, or 'VPNs'.
If you create a new wallet by generating or importing an SRP (not tied to any Google, Apple, or Telegram profile), you have the option to turn 'Basic Functionality' off during the onboarding phase. Click 'Manage Default Settings' when creating your new wallet to toggle this feature off if preferred. You can also access your privacy settings at any time within Settings > Privacy.
Note that disabling 'Basic Functionality' will meaningfully impact your MetaMask experience and you will not have access to important security and communication features like transaction simulations and notifications. MetaMask will function as a basic wallet without all the features outlined below.
Note that if you create a new wallet or ever created a wallet with Google, Apple or Telegram (social login), 'Basic Functionality' is always enabled and cannot be turned off. The email or handle you use is saved to your profile for easy functionality. See below to understand what features are included.
Basic functionality
MetaMask's default configuration, 'Basic Functionality', includes the following features:
- Token detection: Automatically detects and displays tokens you hold across supported networks
- Balance and token price checker: Displays the current fiat value of your tokens and account balance
- NFT detection: Automatically detects and displays NFTs you hold
- Transaction simulations: Estimates the impact of a transaction before you confirm it
- Security alerts: Warns you when signals associated with scams, phishing attempts, impersonation, or other harmful activity are detected
- Phishing detection: Warns you if the site you're visiting is on lists of known and suspected phishing sites
- ENS domains in the address bar: Checks Ethereum's ENS contract to resolve ENS names, and if the name links to IPFS content, exposes your IP address to IPFS third-party services
- Proposed nicknames: Fetches suggested names for addresses you interact with from sources like Etherscan, Infura, and Lens
- Smart contract decoding: Uses 4byte.directory and Sourcify to translate contract data into plain language
- Network details check: Uses chainid.network to show accurate and standardized network details to reduce your chances of connecting to a malicious or incorrect network
- Account balance batch requests: Sends balance updates for all your accounts at once for a faster experience managing multiple accounts
If you want to opt out of any single feature on this list, you'll need to turn off 'Basic Functionality' entirely—there is no way to disable features individually. This will noticeably impact your MetaMask experience, including disabling backup and sync, and notifications. This option is only available to users who onboarded with a Secret Recovery Phrase. If you signed up with Google, Apple, or Telegram, 'Basic Functionality' is always enabled and cannot be turned off.
