How to adjust MetaMask privacy settings
At MetaMask we take user privacy seriously, and continually work to give you the options to configure data usage in a way you're comfortable with.
During onboarding
While onboarding to MetaMask, using either MetaMask Extension or the MetaMask Mobile app, you have the ability to adjust various privacy-related settings before you actually start using MetaMask. You can access these by going to the ‘Default Settings’ menu.
From here, you can configure MetaMask’s default settings according to your preferences. Learn more about what these various settings do further on in this article.
After onboarding
If you’ve already set up your MetaMask instance, you can access your privacy settings by opening up the ‘Settings’ menu, and going to ‘Security & Privacy’.
- Extension
- Mobile
On MetaMask Extension, you can adjust your privacy settings by clicking the three dots in the upper right corner of your MetaMask interface, and clicking ‘Settings’. Then, click the ‘Security & Privacy’ button.
On MetaMask Mobile, you can adjust your privacy settings by clicking the cogwheel icon in the lower left corner of the app, then clicking ‘Security & Privacy’.
Settings
The Security & Privacy screen allows you to manage various settings to your preference. Keep in mind that some settings might only be available on MetaMask Extension, and others only on MetaMask Mobile.
Basic functionality
This setting enables various functionality within MetaMask that make use of internet services, such as gas estimation, auto-detection of tokens, or the ability to see fiat values for your funds. When you use internet services, your IP address is shared, in this case with MetaMask. This is just when you visit any website. MetaMask uses this data temporarily and never sells your data. You can use a VPN or turn off these services, but it may affect your MetaMask experience.
Security alerts
Security alerts provide warnings in your MetaMask wallet if a transaction is suspected as fraudulent. Learn more about security alerts in MetaMask.
Phishing detection
This setting allows MetaMask to identify the site you're visiting and display a warning message if it matches our lists of known and suspected phishing sites. Read more about this mechanism here.
Incoming transactions
We use your account address to retrieve data from Etherscan about transactions such as airdrops or others sent to your address. If this is turned off, you'll only see confirmed transactions.
Estimated balance changes
When you’re about to send a transaction, MetaMask will try to predict the estimated balance changes to your account, allowing you to get a better understanding of the outcome of the transaction you’re about to submit. Learn more about estimated balance changes.
MetaMetrics
To help improve the usability of the decentralized web, MetaMask includes an opt-in analytics system. Learn more about MetaMetrics.
