How to update MetaMask to the latest version

Keeping MetaMask up to date ensures you receive the latest security fixes, performance improvements, and new features. MetaMask is designed to update automatically when prompted, or when the browser is restarted, but in some cases, you may need to manually update.

Manual or developer builds do not update automatically. If you installed MetaMask manually (for example from a GitHub build), see the section below for instructions on switching to a production version.

Read below for instructions on how to trigger a MetaMask update.

情報

To find your MetaMask's current version, navigate to Settings > About.

The MetaMask extension updates through your browser. You will see a prompt like this when an update is available:

MetaMask update version prompt

Restart your browser if you don't see the prompt.

Restarting your browser means fully closing all browser windows and then opening the browser again to get the latest version. Putting your computer to sleep, closing your laptop, or closing a single tab or window does not restart the browser.

Manual update (advanced troubleshooting):

If MetaMask does not update after restarting the browser, you can manually trigger an update using your browser’s extension settings.

note

This method requires enabling Developer Mode, which relaxes important browser security protections. Developer Mode should only be enabled temporarily to trigger an update and then turned off. Leaving Developer Mode enabled increases the risk of security issues.

Chromium-based browsers (Chrome, Brave, Edge, etc.):

  1. Right-click on the MetaMask icon in your toolbar
  2. Click 'Manage extension'

MetaMask Chrome extension manage extension button

  1. On the extensions page, toggle 'Developer mode' ON (top-right corner)
  2. Click the 'Update' button that appears

Chrome extensions update button

  1. Wait for the update to complete
  2. Turn 'Developer mode' OFF

MetaMask should now be updated to the latest version.

Firefox browsers:

  • Click on the settings icon at the top, and then on 'Check for updates'. If there is a new update, you'll be able to manually install it from here.

Why MetaMask may not update automatically?

MetaMask production updates depend on your browser fully restarting. Updates may be delayed if your browser stays open for long periods without restarting, your computer is put to sleep instead of restarting, or MetaMask or a connected dapp tab is always open.

Restart your browser or follow the manual update instructions above to trigger an update.

If you installed MetaMask manually (for example from a GitHub build or developer version), see the section below for how to switch to a production version.

If you installed MetaMask manually:

If you installed MetaMask manually, for example by loading a local build or installing from a GitHub PR, automatic updates will not work, even if you restart your browser or manually check for updates.

This is because manually installed or non-production builds are not connected to the official browser extension update channels. To receive updates, you’ll need to uninstall this version and reinstall the production version of MetaMask from an official browser extension store.

note

Before doing this, you MUST have your Secret Recovery Phrase(s) backed up. You’ll need it to restore your wallet after reinstalling MetaMask. If you do not have your SRP, you will permanently lose access to your wallet.

How to uninstall and reinstall MetaMask:

  1. Back up your Secret Recovery Phrase(s) if you haven't already. Instructions can be found here.
  2. Open your browser extension, click the 3 dots next to MetaMask, and select 'Remove from Chrome' (this process will be similar for all web browsers).

MetaMask Chrome extension remove from Chrome

  1. Install the production version of MetaMask from the official browser extension store.
  2. Click 'Add to Chrome', then confirm by selecting 'Add extension' (this process will be similar for all web browsers).

Google Chrome add MetaMask extension confirm

  1. Open MetaMask and click 'I have an existing wallet' to import your wallet.
  2. Follow the prompts to enter your Secret Recovery Phrase.

For more information on restoring your wallet, see our guide here.

Why we recommend installing from an official store

We strongly recommend installing MetaMask only from an official browser extension store. Store-based installations:

  • Receive automatic updates and security patches
  • Are protected by browser integrity and signature checks
  • Reduce the risk of tampering or malicious modifications

Manually installed extensions do not receive these protections and may be more vulnerable to malware or unintended changes.
