How to send tokens from your MetaMask wallet

This article focuses on sending ETH and other tokens that conform to the ERC-20 standard. However, the process is essentially the same regardless of the network you're using — just make sure you have enough of the network's native token to pay the network fee for the transaction.

What you'll need

• The account address of the recipient.
• A sufficient token balance to send the token of your choice and to cover the network fee for the transaction.

When sending transactions on Ethereum Mainnet, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, and Linea, you can choose to pay the network fee with tokens other than the network's native token. For more information, see here.

If you are on other networks, you will need to have enough of the network's native token to pay the network fee.

How to send tokens

• Mobile

1. Click the 'Send' button on the homepage. To send from a different account, use the account dropdown at the top of the screen to switch accounts.

2. Select the network and token you want to send.

3. Enter or paste the recipient's address, or select one from your address book.

4. Enter the amount you want to send and click 'Continue'.

5. Review the estimated network fees — you can adjust these if needed. Double-check the recipient address, then click 'Confirm'.

6. You'll be redirected to the homepage, where you can see your recent transactions on the 'Activity' tab. On Extension v13.30+ on Ethereum, Linea, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Base, and Polygon, a 'Transaction submitted' toast also appears in the sidebar — click it to open the transaction detail view and track status.

1. Tap the 'Send' button on the homepage.

2. Select the network and token you want to send.

3. Enter the amount, or use the quick-select pills (25%, 50%, etc.) to choose a portion of your balance.

4. Tap 'Continue'.

5. Enter or paste the recipient's address, or select one from your address book.

6. Review the transaction details and tap 'Confirm'.

tip

Always verify the recipient address carefully before confirming. MetaMask will warn you if the address looks similar to one you've used before or is new to you — learn more about address poisoning scams. When sending ERC-20 tokens, also make sure the receiving account supports the token you are sending.

Send and swap crypto at the same time

Whenever you're sending funds from one account to another, you can choose which token you want to spend and select the token the other person wants to receive. This way, you won't have to first swap one token for another and then create another transaction to send it someone's way; saving you both time and gas.

To use MetaMask's 'Send & Swap' feature:

1. Click 'Send' on the MetaMask Extension homepage.
2. Select the address you want to send funds to.
3. Choose the asset to send from your account.
4. Choose the asset you want the recipient to receive.
5. Review the quote and confirm.

Please note that this method does not yet support Smart Transactions.

Notes

• The number of tokens and your transaction fees will not be deducted immediately. The transaction status is pending, which means the transaction has been submitted to the blockchain network and is awaiting confirmation.
• When the transaction is successful, you will see the updated amount of the token balances, as well as the status of the transaction updated to 'Confirmed'.
• If you click on the transaction under the Activity tab on MetaMask, you can review the transaction's status and information, and you can view the transaction record on the network's block explorer, such as Etherscan, BscScan or Polygonscan.
• Sometimes, your transaction may take longer to confirm. When that happens, you'll have the option to Speed Up the transaction by re-submitting it with a higher gas fee, or Cancel the transaction before it gets confirmed. On Extension v13.30+ on supported networks (Ethereum, Linea, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon), access these options by clicking the "Transaction submitted" toast in the sidebar to open the transaction detail view.
