Understanding multichain accounts

MetaMask accounts are evolving from (1 account = 1 address) to (1 account = multiple addresses) to facilitate an easier multichain experience. This makes it easier to manage your assets across networks.

informações

You don’t have to do anything—this is automatic with upcoming versions of MetaMask Mobile v 7.57 and Extension v 13.5. Your funds remain safe and unchanged.

Why the change?

MetaMask started as the Ethereum-only wallet. Over time we added:

  • Native support for Ethereum L2s (Arbitrum, Base, Linea etc.) and other EVM networks.
  • Snaps to extend the wallet and connect to non-EVM networks.

Now, thanks to improvements in our architecture, MetaMask can natively support non-EVM networks like Solana, with more like Bitcoin coming soon.

The single address per account structure worked when your 0x… address was usable across all EVM chains, but non-EVM chains use different formats. Instead of needing 3 separate accounts (e.g. Account 1, Solana account 1, Bitcoin account 1), you will just need one account to navigate all these ecosystems.

What's the difference between a wallet, account, and address now?

  • Wallet: A wallet is a cluster of accounts governed by a source of keys: an SRP, imported private key, or a snap. If you have multiple SRPs in your MetaMask, you have multiple wallets.
  • Account: An account is a collection of addresses from different networks within a wallet.
  • Address: An address is a unique identifier on a network, derived from a public-private key pair. This is what you use to send and receive tokens on a specific network.

What are multichain accounts?

A multichain account houses multiple addresses across networks. It will be the default account in MetaMask from now on.

  • Before, each account had one address (Ethereum and Solana required separate accounts)
  • Now, “Account 1” will hold multiple addresses each mapped to a different default network (Ethereum, Solana, Bitcoin (soon), and more)

This means fewer accounts to manage, less switching back and forth, and easier cross-network activities.

What about existing accounts?

All your original addresses are accessible. Each multichain account pairs one EVM address with one Solana address (soon to include Bitcoin and others). If they’re uneven—more EVM addresses than Solana and vice versa—new addresses are created to match them evenly.

  • If you never created a non-EVM account like Solana before, nothing changes. Your EVM address across Ethereum, L2s, and sidechains will keep the account and name it was tied to and you will automatically have a new Solana address you can choose to use or ignore.
  • If you did create Solana accounts in the past, they’ll be “matched up” with an EVM address chronologically and auto-adopt the EVM account name. E.g. your first Solana account would be grouped as an address into Account 1, your second Account 2, etc.
  • If you do have more Solana accounts than EVM accounts, new EVM addresses will be created to "match up" and auto-adopt the Solana account name.

What this means for you

This update should make your experience easier as you have fewer accounts to manage, less required switching, and more flexibility.

No migration is needed on your part, your funds remain safe and unchanged. The update is automatic across MetaMask Mobile v 7.57 and MetaMask Extension v 13.5.

Familiarize yourself with the new UX:

  • Copying address: Tap the “copy” icon on the mobile homepage or click "network addresses" under the account name in extension to choose from the list of addresses (Ethereum and Solana).
  • Sending and receiving crypto: Select the token first; MetaMask automatically uses the correct address.
  • Connecting to dapps: Select the account; the correct address is connected.

Questions?

How does this affect hardware accounts?

Solana isn't supported on hardware wallets yet, so your hardware accounts will remain EVM-only.

How are accounts grouped?

Each account will pair one EVM address with one Solana address. If they're uneven, new addresses will be created to match them evenly:

  • If you have more EVM addresses than Solana addresses, new Solana addresses will be created to match them evenly.
  • If you have more Solana addresses than EVM addresses, new EVM addresses will be created to match them evenly.

When addresses are paired, they will auto-adopt the previous EVM-only account name, unless you had more Solana accounts than EVM accounts, in which case the new account will be named after the previous Solana account.

Where can I find my addresses?

You can find your addresses by tapping the "copy" icon on the mobile homepage or clicking the "network addresses" box on the extension homepage under the account name.

You can also find addresses in "Account details".

Why do I have fewer accounts now?

Since addresses are paired up, your new account will combine previously separate addresses into one. All addresses you ever created will still be accessible.

Do you delete any addresses?

No, we don't delete any addresses, only create new ones if needed to match accounts evenly. All addresses you ever created will still be accessible.
