How to install MetaMask manually

Does this article need to be translated?

While MetaMask is published on multiple browser extension stores, and these stores benefit from auto-updates, there are reasons you might want to install a copy of MetaMask manually. For example, you may be using an old, unsupported dapp that no longer works with the latest version of MetaMask. Or maybe you're just nostalgic? That's cool too.

Warning

Before you do this, be aware:

  • Old builds are missing critical security updates — vulnerabilities may have already been publicly disclosed.
  • You lose browser-level security protections like extension integrity checks.
  • You're responsible for future updates, and missing them will expose you to risk.

Did someone on the internet tell you to install a version of MetaMask manually?

  • If someone is directing you to do this, they're probably a scammer — and probably trying to steal your crypto. Just like anything else online, don’t trust things at face value.

So, if you know what you're doing, and you're ready to install MetaMask manually:

The easiest thing to do is to download a pre-build release of MetaMask. You can retrieve official builds of MetaMask here. If you're a Brave developer, you can also build from source.

See below for instructions for different browsers:

  1. On the releases page, pick a version you'll like to install.

  2. Download the zip file.

  3. Unzip the file in a folder.

  1. Open Chrome, and type “chrome://extensions” in the browser URL bar.

  2. Click "Load Unpacked"
